About the claim
This claim arose as part of the review by an accountant of a client’s tax affairs, which included reviewing their portfolio of properties.
They identified the potential for additional claims which required collaboration with a specialist and they approached us to work together to maximise the clients claim.
The client was a company who owns and operates a portfolio of self-storage units across the UK.
Our approach
The capital expenditure they incurred including a mix of property purchases, fit-outs, an extension and the construction of several new units over several sites. Owing to their historical nature, information on some older units was limited. Therefore, we had to survey each site.
Careful consideration was given to those sites where alteration works had been made to existing buildings.
Example of fixtures that were claimed:
- Storage equipment
- Electric & manual operation of roller shutter doors
- Door entry systems & access control
- Goods lift
Key Takeaway
By reviewing their historic expenditure, we were able to reconstruct the costs involved and together with the newer construction expenditure, we secured a substantial claim for our client.
If you have historical expenditure on properties you still own and have never claimed capital allowances for, it’s never too late to enquire.
